A dramatic security scare unfolded late Saturday night at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner when a gunman opened fire inside the Washington Hilton, prompting the swift evacuation of President Donald Trump and other top officials.
Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Thomas Allen, a 31-year-old man from Torrance, California. Federal prosecutors say Allen allegedly rushed a security checkpoint in the hotel lobby shortly after 00:45 GMT, attempting to breach screening measures before exchanging gunfire with law enforcement officers.
The United States Secret Service immediately evacuated Trump, Vice President JD Vance, First Lady Melania Trump, and other dignitaries from the ballroom stage. Officials confirmed that all protectees were unharmed.
One Secret Service agent was shot at close range during the confrontation but survived thanks to a bulletproof vest. The agent is reported to be in stable condition. Allen, who was subdued and taken into custody, was transported to a hospital for evaluation.
Speaking at a late-night press briefing, Trump described the suspect as a “lone wolf” armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun, and knives. Authorities are still investigating his motive and how he managed to bring weapons into a heavily secured venue.
“This could have been much worse,” Trump said, reflecting on the incident and noting the increasing dangers faced by public officials and law enforcement.
The high-profile dinner, attended by hundreds of journalists, government officials, and media figures, descended into confusion as gunshots rang out. Guests were initially held inside for nearly an hour before the event was officially canceled. Organizers later confirmed the dinner would be rescheduled.
Interim Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll stated that Allen is believed to have been a registered guest at the hotel, raising serious concerns about security protocols. Federal prosecutors say he is expected to face multiple charges, including using a firearm during a crime of violence, with an arraignment anticipated in the coming days.
The incident marks a rare and alarming breach at one of Washington’s most prominent social and political gatherings, underscoring ongoing concerns about security amid heightened political tensions in the United States.
