The inaugural Kho Kho competition at the 2025 USSSA Ball Games II Championship got off to an exciting start on Saturday at Gulu High School, with seven teams competing in the maiden edition of the sport.
The introduction of Kho Kho attracted plenty of attention from athletes and officials involved in other disciplines, many of whom gathered around the playing arena to learn the rules and witness the fast-paced action of one of the newest additions to the USSSA programme.
Sacred Heart (yellow) against Kyambogo College
In the girls’ category, Kyambogo College School produced the most emphatic performance of the day, thrashing tournament hosts Sacred Heart School Gulu 117-25 in a one-sided Group A encounter. Serere Township SS also enjoyed a flying start after defeating Soroti SS 70-17, while Olio Seed SS recovered from their opening loss to edge YY Okot Memorial 45-33. Earlier, St Elizabeth SS had begun their campaign with a convincing 54-36 victory over Olio Seed SS.
The boys’ competition also delivered entertaining contests. Labori High School recorded the biggest winning margin after overwhelming Soroti SS 94-30, before Atiira Seed SS responded with an impressive 86-59 victory over Labori High School. In Group B, Rubongi Army SS opened their campaign with a dominant 75-35 win against Serere Township SS.
With the opening day’s action completed, anticipation continues to build around the new sport, which has already won over spectators with its speed, teamwork and tactical play.
The group stage continues on Sunday as teams battle for places in the knockout rounds.
