KAMPALA, Uganda — Access to safe water remains a distant reality for many Ugandans, prompting calls from advocates for the government to boost its financial commitment to sanitation and hygiene infrastructure.
The appeal comes from Viva con Agua Uganda, a nongovernmental organization that has been working to close the gap in water access since 2015. Officials say that while the government has made strides, increased funding is essential to curbing waterborne diseases linked to contaminated sources.
George Aribo, CEO of Viva con Agua Uganda, said the organization prioritizes schools to instill healthy habits early. The group constructs water sources and sanitation facilities, including toilets and menstrual waste incinerators.
Our goal is to ensure that every person, regardless of their social or economic status, can access clean and safe water, Aribo said.
Since its local inception, the group has reached more than 300,000 people. In 2025 alone, it supported 25,000 individuals across 30 schools.
However, Aribo warned that the proposed National Sovereignty Bill 2026, currently under parliamentary review, could threaten the international partnerships that sustain these projects. He noted that the bill in its current form might discourage donors from Germany and other nations.
It could lead to a reduction in support from our international partners, which would disrupt our operations and ultimately affect vulnerable Ugandans, Aribo said.

The organization, which was founded in 2006 by former soccer player Benjamin Adrion, uses an unconventional outreach model. It enlists musicians, athletes and poets to communicate hygiene messages through art and sports.
Communications representative Daphine Birungi Jemima said this creative approach helps the message resonate in high-need areas, including conflict-affected regions.
The organization has implemented projects in several districts, including Wakiso, Kampala, Yumbe, Oyam and Bundibugyo.
