Muteesa I Royal University brought the Pepsi University Football League to a thrilling close, edging YMCA Institute 1-0 in a tightly contested final to lift their maiden title in style at Hamz Stadium Nakivubo.
The victory marks a remarkable milestone for the Royal Lions, who become only the second university in UFL history to win the trophy within their first two seasons of participation. Kampala University remains the only other side to achieve a similar feat, having clinched the inaugural title back in 2013. Muteesa, who joined the competition in 2025, wasted no time in etching their name into the league’s history books with this 2026 triumph.

The final itself was a tense affair, with both sides showing caution in the opening stages. YMCA Institute, playing in their first-ever UFL final, came closest to breaking the deadlock early on. In the 22nd minute, Makubuya Trevor found himself in a promising position, but his effort lacked composure as he failed to control and direct the ball on target, letting a golden opportunity slip away.
That miss proved costly.
Just six minutes later, Muteesa capitalized. In the 28th minute, Mutambo Sam rose highest to meet a well-delivered cross from Bukenya Twaha, powering a header past the YMCA goalkeeper to give the Royal Lions the lead. The decisive goal ignited celebrations among Muteesa supporters and ultimately stood as the difference between the two sides.
Despite pushing for an equalizer, YMCA Institute struggled to break down Muteesa’s disciplined defense in the second half. The Royal Lions remained organized and resolute, managing the game effectively to secure a historic victory at the final whistle.

For YMCA, the defeat marked a painful end to an otherwise impressive campaign, having reached the final for the first time. For Muteesa I Royal University, however, it was a night of triumph, signaling the rise of a new force in university football.
With this victory, the Royal Lions have not only claimed the championship but also announced their arrival as serious contenders in Ugandan varsity football for years to come.
