Five police officers who were on duty during the daring break-in at the Bank of Uganda (BoU) headquarters in Kampala have been arrested as investigations intensify into the theft of seven laptops from the central bank’s commercial offices.
The officers, currently detained at Railway Police Station, are being investigated for alleged collusion and negligence after attackers reportedly gained access to the highly guarded premises on the night of May 3 to May 4, 2026.
According to preliminary findings, the suspects include counter-terrorism personnel who were deployed to guard the facility at the time of the incident. Investigators suspect some of the officers may have either abandoned their duty posts or worked together with the attackers to facilitate the operation.
Security sources revealed that more than 20 suspects are now linked to the case, with forensic experts conducting analysis on several seized phones and laptops as part of ongoing investigations.
The break-in, which has shocked both security and financial circles, reportedly targeted the commercial offices located in the basement section of one of the central bank buildings near City Square on Kampala Road.
Investigators believe the assailants accessed the premises through the City Square-facing entrance, possibly using duplicate keys, before spending nearly three hours inside the fortified institution undetected.
“Yes, we had a break-in and seven laptops were stolen,” a source at the bank confirmed earlier.
A joint security task force comprising officers from the Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala, the Uganda Police Force, Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Defence Intelligence and Security (DIS), and the Internal Security Organisation (ISO) has since taken over investigations.
The scene was combed for forensic evidence while security personnel also examined the phones of officers who were on duty during the raid.
A police sniffer dog deployed during the operation reportedly tracked leads to several buildings in downtown Kampala, including Kalungi Plaza, Kirumira Towers, and Mutaasa Kafeero buildings, where some suspects linked to stolen electronic devices were arrested.
Security agencies temporarily sealed off the affected premises and surrounding buildings during an operation that lasted several hours as detectives searched for the missing equipment and possible accomplices.
Despite the breach, the Bank of Uganda assured the public that its critical operations and financial systems were not affected.
“The matter is currently under investigation, and the Bank of Uganda is working closely with relevant security agencies to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and take appropriate action,” the bank said in a statement.
The central bank further emphasized that all its core operations and services continue to run normally despite the security scare.
The incident has, however, sparked renewed concern about the security of Uganda’s most sensitive financial institution, with investigators now racing to establish how attackers managed to infiltrate and operate inside the heavily protected premises for hours without detection.
Authorities say more arrests are expected as investigations continue.
