Kakungulu Memorial Secondary School has sealed qualification for the 2026 East Africa Secondary Schools Games despite narrowly missing out on a podium finish at the USSSA Ball Games I badminton championship held at Seroma Christian High School.
The school’s boys’ badminton team booked a place at the East Africa championship slated for August 2026 in Morogoro after an impressive campaign in a tournament that attracted a record 40 schools from across the country.
Kakungulu Memorial, however, fell short in the battle for third place after losing to hosts Seroma Christian High School in one of the final classification matches.
Head coach William Kigozi remained optimistic despite the setback, praising the resilience and growth shown by his youthful squad throughout the competition.
“This is still a young project we are developing. I am very impressed with their performance, especially the girls because some of them are still learning how to hold a racquet, but they have surprised many people,” Kigozi told this website.
“I believe next year there will be huge development in them,” he added.
The girls’ team also earned praise after finishing sixth overall, a performance Kigozi believes lays a strong foundation for the future of badminton at the school.
Among the notable players who featured for Kakungulu Memorial were Serwada Ryan, Zamba Julius, Serubiri Abdul Awal, Ssendiwala Atlas, Emaru Don Liam and Samula Abdul Shakur in the boys’ category.
The girls’ team featured Namubiru Victoria, Najuma Vilgar, Kobusinjya Joselyn, Naggayi Rashimah, Nabagereka Anisha and Alaru Price.
The championship climaxed on Thursday with Kibuli Secondary School successfully retaining the boys’ title while Mbogo High School defended the girls’ crown.
The record participation at this year’s championship also impressed Simon Mugabi, who visited the tournament venue during the games and applauded the continued growth of school badminton in Uganda.
