Anita Annet Among, the Speaker of Parliament of Uganda, has been reported to the Inspectorate of Government over allegations that she failed to declare her wealth or under-declared her assets, contrary to the provisions of Uganda’s Leadership Code Act.
In a complaint dated May 13, 2026, and addressed to Aisha Nabuzze Batala, a group of Ugandan citizens and taxpayers asked the anti-corruption body to investigate Among’s declarations of income, assets and liabilities.
The petition, which was received by the Inspectorate of Government’s Central Registry on the same day, cites Section 21 of the Leadership Code Act, Chapter 33 of the Laws of Uganda, and requests access to the Speaker’s declaration, if one was filed.
“We accordingly lodge this complaint regarding failure to declare and/or under declaration of wealth by the aforementioned Anita Annet Among, and hereby request you, as provided for by Section 22 of the Leadership Code Act, to furnish us with her declaration, if any,” the complainants wrote.
Questions Over Compliance With Leadership Code
Under Section 4 of the Leadership Code Act, all leaders are required to submit written declarations of their income, assets and liabilities to the Inspectorate every two years during the month of March.
The complainants noted that failure to comply with the law may attract sanctions, including demotion, dismissal from office and forfeiture of undeclared or under-declared assets.
The petitioners said they are prepared to provide any assistance necessary to support investigations.
“We, the complainants, are ready to assist your good office in conducting these investigations at the earliest time possible,” the letter states.
They also urged Justice Batala, who recently assumed office, to handle the matter with integrity and professionalism in line with commitments she made during her inauguration.
Complaint Comes Amid Public Debate Over Wealth
The complaint adds to ongoing public scrutiny surrounding Among’s wealth and lifestyle, which have drawn both criticism and support.
Recent reports about her acquisition of a Rolls-Royce Cullinan intensified debate over the accumulation of wealth by senior public officials. Her expansive residence in Bukedea District has also attracted attention, with critics questioning the source of wealth among top leaders.
The discussion gained further prominence after Muhoozi Kainerugaba publicly commented on extravagant spending by leaders, saying public servants should focus on serving citizens rather than enriching themselves while many Ugandans continue to face economic hardship.
Among Maintains Wealth Is Legitimate
Among has consistently denied any wrongdoing and maintains that her assets were acquired legally. Her supporters point to investments she has made in Bukedea, including schools, sports facilities and health infrastructure.
The complaint was reportedly signed by six citizens: Andrew Karamagi, Mercy Munduru, Kato Tumusiime, Gift Grace Achilla, Praise Aloikin and Godwin Toko.
The Inspectorate of Government had not publicly commented on the complaint by press time.
