Veteran politician and senior government minister Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Jim Muhwezi Katugugu has officially been sworn in as Member of Parliament for Rujumbura County in Rukungiri District as Uganda’s 12th Parliament continues to take shape.
Muhwezi was among 86 Members of Parliament sworn in during the morning session on Thursday, bringing the total number of legislators sworn in so far to 270 since the exercise commenced on Wednesday. The Clerk to Parliament later announced a short break before proceedings resumed in the afternoon.
The colourful ceremony at Parliament attracted senior government officials, political leaders, family members, and supporters who gathered to witness the legislators take the oath of allegiance and officially assume office for the 2026–2031 term.
Other notable figures sworn in were Minister of State for Finance (Microfinance) Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune, who represents Kyotera County, and former Trade Minister Amelia Kyambadde, who makes a remarkable return to Parliament as the Woman MP for Mawokota North after missing out on the 11th Parliament. Other leaders sworn in included Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze, Amos Kankunda Kibwika of Rwampara County, Stephen Kangwagye of Bukanga County, and Laura Kanushu representing Persons with Disabilities.
The day’s proceedings kicked off shortly after 8:00am with prayers and the national anthem before the first MPs-elect stepped onto the podium. Despite a light morning drizzle, the atmosphere remained lively and energetic, with traditional drums, music, and cheers from supporters filling the Parliamentary grounds throughout the ceremony.
Also sworn in were representatives from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), James Kinalwa and Samuel Kavuma, as Parliament continued to reflect Uganda’s diverse political and institutional representation. Meanwhile, National Unity Platform’s Hassan Kirumira of Katikamu South also took oath alongside members from different political affiliations.
The swearing-in exercise, which is expected to run until Friday, 15 May 2026, marks a significant milestone in the formation of the 12th Parliament as newly elected legislators prepare to begin their legislative duties, elect parliamentary leadership, and shape Uganda’s governance agenda over the next five years.
