Chelsea F.C. have confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new manager, handing the highly rated Spaniard a four-year contract as the London club embarks on another major rebuild under its American ownership.
Alonso, one of Europe’s most respected young coaches, will officially take charge at Stamford Bridge on July 1 and becomes the latest high-profile figure tasked with restoring Chelsea to the summit of English and European football.
In his first statement after the announcement, Alonso said he was honoured to be entrusted with one of the biggest jobs in world football.
“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” he said.
“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.
“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club, and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”
The appointment comes after Chelsea dismissed Liam Rosenior in April after just three months in charge, following another turbulent season that has left the Blues languishing in ninth place in the Premier League.
Chelsea’s move to secure Alonso was finalized shortly after their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City F.C. in the FA Cup Final, where interim boss Calum McFarlane oversaw the team.
The former Real Madrid C.F. and Liverpool F.C. midfielder arrives with an impressive reputation despite recently leaving Real Madrid. He previously guided Bayer 04 Leverkusen to a historic unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning campaign in the 2023/24 season, earning widespread praise for his tactical intelligence and calm leadership.
As a player, Alonso won two UEFA Champions League titles and enjoyed a glittering career at the highest level.
Chelsea executives believe Alonso’s appointment reflects lessons learned from previous managerial changes. Since the arrival of BlueCo ownership, the club has cycled through Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca and Rosenior.
Club officials view Alonso as a long-term leader capable of not only improving results on the pitch but also building a winning culture throughout the organization.
He is expected to work closely with Chelsea’s sporting directors and ownership on a busy summer transfer window, with the club targeting experienced first-team players, including a new centre-back.
Chelsea’s hopes of returning to European competition remain uncertain after their FA Cup final defeat, though qualification for the UEFA Conference League or UEFA Europa League is still mathematically possible depending on their final league position.
Despite recent struggles, Chelsea’s hierarchy remains determined to re-establish the club among football’s elite and they believe Xabi Alonso is the man to lead that revival.
