Over 20 UPDF soldiers injured as military truck overturns in Omoro

At least 20 Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers were injured on Saturday after a military truck transporting them to their duty stations overturned in Agago, northern Uganda.

The soldiers were among hundreds who passed out from Labwordwong Military Training School on Thursday and were being deployed to various military units under the Fourth Infantry Division.

While initial reports indicated that the crash occurred along the Agago-Pader road, subsequent information suggests the accident may have happened in neighbouring Omoro district.

Sources told URN that the military truck had earlier refuelled at the Fifth Infantry Division headquarters in Acholi Pii, Pader district, before continuing its journey to the Fourth Infantry Division when it overturned.

Military sources said two of the victims sustained serious leg injuries, while the rest suffered injuries of varying severity and are receiving treatment at the Fourth Infantry Division barracks.

An army officer, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said none of the injuries had been confirmed as fatal.

Capt. David Kamya, the Fourth Infantry Division public information officer, earlier confirmed that a military vehicle had been involved in a road crash but declined to provide further details.

The UPDF had not, by press time, issued a detailed statement on the accident or the circumstances under which it occurred.

The accident comes just days after another deadly road crash in northern Uganda, in which an Opit Travellers bus collided head-on with a trailer in Bobi sub-county, Omoro district, along the Kampala-Gulu highway, killing 15 people and injuring 28 others.
