Seven young men have been remanded to Luzira Prison after appearing before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court in connection with the alleged robbery of Shs620 million belonging to a Kampala-based forex bureau operator.
The accused, whose ages range between 18 and 30 years, were presented before Senior Principal Magistrate Grade One Winnie Nankya Jatiko on a charge of aggravated robbery.
Due to the gravity of the offence, the court did not allow them to enter a plea, as such cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
The suspects are Ashiraf Mulindwa, a resident of Kyebando Kabulengwa in Wakiso District; Akid Khalid, a boda boda rider from Naluvule Village; Muhammed Kayiira, a farmer from Kasekere Village; Tamim Kawaganya; Ivan Ongom, a marketer from Kira Municipality; Ismail Maso Kasozi of Matuga Ward; and Ivan Gizamba, a hawker from Nabweru Municipality.
According to prosecution, the group allegedly participated in the robbery on March 26, 2026, at the Centenary Bank branch on Nkrumah Road in Kampala. Investigators claim the suspects, together with others who have not yet been arrested, targeted Gisma Zulaika Hussein and made off with a black backpack containing Shs620 million belonging to Economic Exchange Forex Bureau.
Court documents indicate that the attackers were allegedly armed with dangerous weapons, including pangas, during the commission of the offence or while escaping from the scene.
State Attorney Grace Amy told the court that inquiries into the matter are still ongoing and requested additional time to complete investigations. The prosecution’s request was granted, leading to the remand of all seven accused persons.
They are expected to return to court on June 15, 2026, for a mention of the case and an update on the progress of investigations.
The prosecution of the suspects comes amid continued efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat violent robberies and financial crimes, which have become a growing concern in Kampala and other urban centres across the country.
