The Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) East has successfully dismantled a notorious robbery gang that has been terrorizing residents of Mukono Municipality and surrounding areas, in a major breakthrough against violent crime.
The operation followed a series of aggravated robberies carried out by a group of youths commonly known as “Eggaali,” who targeted members of the public using dangerous weapons, including knives, pangas, and pavers. The gang reportedly robbed victims of mobile phones, bags, cash, laptops, wristwatches, and other valuables, particularly along Kayunga Road, Kusatu, Nasuuti, and Wantoni.
According to Police, the arrests were the result of a spearhead intelligence-led operation launched in response to growing complaints from residents and victims.
The investigations stemmed from a case of aggravated robbery registered at Mukono Central Police Station on May 25, 2026, under SD Reference No. 04/25/05/2026. The complainant, a technician, reported that he had been attacked and robbed of cash and other personal property while returning home.
Following intensive investigations, detectives developed crucial leads that culminated in a successful operation on May 31, 2026. During the operation, Police arrested 25-year-old Muhanguzi Vian, who later confessed to participating in a series of robberies within Mukono Municipality and revealed the identities of his accomplices.
Muhanguzi subsequently led investigators to a hideout in Kigombya Cell, where members of the gang allegedly spent their days before carrying out robberies under the cover of darkness.
At the hideout, Police arrested five additional suspects identified as Mubiru David, alias “City” (20); Kizito Solomon, alias “Kitama” (18); Ssemanda Junior, alias “Kamese” (17); Muyomba Paul, alias “Matama” (17); and Okumu Mark, alias “Sekere” (18).
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly admitted to committing numerous robberies across Mukono Municipality and stated that they had lost count of the number of people they had attacked.
A search conducted at the premises led to the recovery of several exhibits, including a Burdizzo, a pruning machine, a hammer, scissors, six wristwatches, suspected opium, counterfeit currency notes in denominations of UGX 20,000 and UGX 50,000, eighteen SIM cards, a torch, two face masks, two heavy-duty door cutters, eight knives—including a butterfly knife—and six phone chargers.
Further investigations led to the arrest of the gang’s alleged ringleader, Lubanga Brian, alias “2PAC”.
Police have confirmed that the operation remains ongoing as efforts continue to identify, trace, and apprehend other members of the criminal network. Authorities have commended the investigative team for their swift action and urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing information that can aid crime prevention efforts.
The successful operation is expected to enhance security and restore confidence among residents who had been living in fear of the gang’s activities.
