Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikiro of Buganda, has urged Parliament to prioritize the health sector in its legislative agenda.
Mayiga emphasized the need for widespread distribution of hospitals across the country, equipped with adequate medicines and equipment, and ensuring fair compensation for health workers.
The Katikiro made these remarks on Tuesday during a visit by Speaker of Parliament Anita Among and a delegation of MPs to Bulange, Mengo, in support of the upcoming Kabaka Birthday Run.
Speaker Among, accompanied by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa and other officials including Government Chief Whip Hon Hamson Obua and Minister of State for Disaster Preparedness Hon Lilian Aber, was warmly welcomed by Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga at Bulange.
In his address, Mayiga hailed the Speaker’s visit as historic, signaling a new era of collaboration between the Kingdom and Parliament.
“This marks the beginning of a significant partnership between Parliament and the Kingdom, focusing on initiatives to combat HIV/AIDS and other health challenges,” Mayiga stated.
“For the last five years, Kabaka’s runs have been themed in the fight against HIV/AIDs and it is projected to continue following threats of withdrawal of financial support by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)” he added.
He further emphasized the importance of politicians addressing not only political matters but also crucial social needs like health, sports, community development, and cultural preservation.
“Don’t get so consumed by politics all the time. Give special attention to some social aspects like health, sports, community development, protection of culture and heritage,” he asserted.
In her remarks, Speaker Among praised the Kabaka of Buganda, His Royal Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, for his leadership in prioritizing healthcare initiatives. She pledged continued support for the Kingdom’s humanitarian endeavors.
“I commend the Kabaka for his commitment to combating diseases like HIV/AIDS. Our presence here signifies our solidarity with Buganda Kingdom’s efforts in this regard,” Among remarked.
As a gesture of support, Speaker Among announced a contribution of Shs50 million from Parliament for the run, while the Buganda Parliamentary Caucus purchased kits for 529 MPs worth Shs10,580,000. Additionally, the Speaker and MPs presented birthday gifts to the Kabaka.
The Annual Kabaka Birthday Run, now in its 11th year, remains a cornerstone event in Buganda Kingdom’s calendar, raising funds for various health-related causes, including the fight against HIV/AIDS, fistula, and sickle cell disease.
