Uganda Burundi proudly represented through Australia at World Cup

Uganda, Burundi proudly represented through Australia at World Cup

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to captivate audiences around the globe, Uganda and Burundi are proudly seeing their stories reflected on football’s grandest stage through two members of the Australia national team.

Although Australia’s Socceroos wear the green and gold, defenders of African heritage have emerged among the squad, highlighting powerful stories of migration, resilience and opportunity.

One of those players is Jason Geria, the experienced defender currently playing for Japanese club Albirex Niigata. Born in Canberra, Australia, Geria is the son of Ugandan parents from the Lugbara community who fled Uganda following the fall of Idi Amin’s regime.

Eligible to represent Uganda through his parents, Geria instead chose Australia, making his international debut in 2016 before earning a recall in 2024 under coach Tony Popovic during the World Cup qualifying campaign.

His selection for Australia’s 2026 World Cup squad marked the first major international tournament of his career and has been celebrated by many Ugandans who continue to follow his progress with pride.

Geria has also enjoyed a distinguished club career. After developing through the Australian Institute of Sport and Brisbane Roar youth systems, he joined Melbourne Victory in 2012 and went on to become one of the club’s most decorated players, making more than 220 appearances in all competitions.

Burundi’s connection to the World Cup comes through teenage sensation Nestory Irankunda. Born in a refugee camp in Tanzania to Burundian parents, Irankunda moved to Australia as an infant before beginning a remarkable rise through the country’s football ranks.

The winger first made headlines at Adelaide United before securing a high-profile move to German giants Bayern Munich in 2024. He later joined English Championship side Watford, where his development has continued.

At the World Cup, Irankunda made history by scoring in Australia’s 2-0 victory over Türkiye, becoming the youngest Australian ever to score at a FIFA World Cup. For many Africans, his journey represents far more than football.

It is a testament to hope, perseverance and the opportunities that can emerge from even the most challenging beginnings. Meanwhile, Uganda faces the possibility of losing another promising diaspora talent.

Manchester City youngster Divine Mukasa is increasingly being linked with England’s national teams after signing a new contract with the Premier League champions.

His situation echoes that of Geria and highlights Uganda’s ongoing challenge of convincing talented diaspora players to commit their international futures to the Cranes rather than established football nations.
