The National Resistance Movement-NRM secretariat has denied having prior knowledge of an alleged leadership crisis and internal divisions within the party in Kabale District ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Tension emerged within the Kabale NRM ranks following a letter dated 13 December from the Kabale District NRM Administrator, Amos Rwasheija, directing the Southern Division NRM Chairperson, Narasensio Tumwesigye, to step aside.
He accused Tumwesigye of supporting Kabale Municipality Mayor Emmanuel Sentaro Byamugisha and Kabale Municipality MP, Dr Nicholas Kamara, actions he said contravene the party’s code of conduct.
Rwasheija instructed the division’s vice chairperson, Hilda Kedembe, to assume duties as the acting NRM Chairperson for Southern Division.
Additional allegations indicate that some NRM flag bearers have failed to support their colleagues during the campaign period, while other district party leaders are allegedly backing independent and opposition candidates without facing disciplinary action. Rwasheija said Tumwesigye’s suspension was intended to serve as a warning, stressing that the party would not compromise its principles.
He added that Tumwesigye could be reinstated upon issuing an apology or following a decision by the party’s top leadership.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, NRM Auditor Moses Ntahonari Turyomurugyendo said that the party secretariat works to resolve disputes once they are formally reported. He made the remarks after the launch of the NRM grassroots mobilization campaign at the UNITE Campus (formerly NTC Kabale) Resource Centre.
The meeting aims to strengthen grassroots party structures and boost support for President Yoweri Museveni and NRM flag bearers across Kabale District. Journalists were initially excluded from the closed-door meeting but were later briefed by party leaders.
Ntahonari, who also serves as the Kigezi Regional Mobilization Coordinator, urged party leaders to rally behind all NRM flag bearers, emphasizing unity as key to the party’s electoral success.
Meanwhile, Kabale District NRM Acting Chairperson Bridget Asinga Tumwesigye dismissed allegations that she supports independent candidates, including Ndorwa East MP Wilfred Niwagaba, Kabale District Woman MP Catherine Ndamira Atwakire, and LC5 Chairperson Nelson Nshangabasheija.
Asinga, who is contesting for Kyanamira Sub-county District Councillor on the NRM ticket, stated that the meeting focused on forming and empowering grassroots mobilizers to ensure effective mobilization for President Museveni and all NRM candidates. However, she added that she would not support party flag bearers who fail to support her bid.
Counsel Eliab Naturinda Mporera, the NRM flag bearer for Ndorwa County West, described the internal divisions as regrettable and called on party leaders to stop campaigning against fellow NRM candidates. He noted that each village has been allocated 750,000 shillings to mobilize votes for President Museveni and NRM party flag bearers, and urged members to adhere to party guidelines and promote unity.
