Member of Parliament for Mbarara City North, Robert Mwesigwa Rukaari, has pledged to resolve the long-standing electricity connectivity challenges affecting several wards in his constituency, particularly Rwemigina and Bunusya.
Speaking to residents at Kaburangire Church of Uganda in Rwemigina Ward during a fundraising drive for the construction of Kaburangire Primary School, Rukaari said he has already invested about UGX 90 million of his personal funds to improve electricity supply in the area.
The MP told the gathering that he procured three 100kVA transformers from KOICA Company Ltd, which have been installed in Kenkombe, Kabingo and Nyakinengo. He added that he also bought and supplied three-phase power poles, which have already been erected.
“The only remaining work is the wiring and final connection to the national grid,” Rukaari said. “I know how serious the problem of power shortage is—homes and businesses are suffering. I am working very hard to ensure that, at the very least by Christmas or before the elections, electricity is connected and this issue is sorted once and for all.”
Rukaari also identified other power-stressed areas in Mbarara City North, including Rwenjeru, Kishasha and parts of Kakoma, noting that resource limitations make it impossible to address all areas simultaneously.
“As leaders, we do what we can. Where I am able in my personal capacity, I step in, and where government intervention is needed, I continue lobbying so our people can access electricity and other essential services,” he said.
Rukaari is serving his first term in Parliament after defeating incumbent Michael Tusiime in the 2021 general elections. He recently lost the NRM party primaries to Christopher Bakashaba but rejected the results and has opted to contest as an independent. Political observers say he is steadily regaining grassroots support against his main rival.
At the same function, Robert Twine, a local leader, appealed to government and area leaders to support the rehabilitation or construction of Kaburangire Primary School and to help the school acquire a centre number to improve its operational status.
