Julius Mugisa, an independent candidate who lost elections to Ronald Akugizibwe Aled of NRM in the just concluded general elections for Buruli County in Masindi district has decided to take legal action against NRM’s Ronald Aled Akuguzibwe challenging his victory citing irregularities during the exercise.
Mugisa revealed this during press conference held at Albert guest house within Masindi town on Tuesday morning.
Akugizibwe Aled Ronald (NRM) won the parliamentary seat with 13,321 votes, followed by Julius Mugisa who garnered 11,087 votes. Among other contenders include Zacheus Mwetegya (Independent) obtained 1,365 votes, followed by Patrick Ongei (DF), Fred Barongo (Independent) and Ismail Nyakojo (Independent), while FDC’s Fredrick Banage Bitamale came last with 222 votes.
Mugisa said he has hired five law firms to challenge the victory of Akugizibwe for reinforcement after gathering enough evidence of irregularities during the elections which among includes ballot stuffing, bribery among others.
Mugisa who couldn’t disclose the names of the legal firms said 2 of the five are in Kampala, other 2 in Hoima and 1 in Masindi saying they are in advanced stages stressing that though the electoral commission announced the results, it did not read the results per polling station.
Mugisa mentioned some of the irregularities including multiple voting and intimidation of his agents including chasing them from the polling stations but called for calmness among his supporters and assured them of justice in their favour.
Mugisa also disclosed that a number of cases have been opened at Masindi CPS and the law firms are gathering enough evidence on ground including statements from voters then file the petition in court.
According to Mugisa, the main reason of petitioning the electoral commission and court so that there can be transparency during the election exercise stating that he still belongs to NRM party but appealed to electorates to vote for leaders who will serve them not political parties.
Stephen Kabindi, Mugisa’s agent accuses the electoral commission of tallying votes per polling station stressing that the returning officer only tallied votes from ten polling stations out of 141 and declared the contender as a winner something he says undermines the right of contestants.
Gastervus Kakaire, the Electoral Commission Returning Officer Masindi said that his office is yet to recieve any petition saying he will officially respond once received.
He however said those who are not satisfied with the declaration of results have a right to challenge the results in courts of law.
