Sewungu’s Victory Hangs in Balance as Court Orders for Recount

Kalungu– Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court has granted an application for a vote recount filed by Ismael Semakula (independent )the first runner up in the recently concluded Kalungu West Parliamentary election. In this election, Joseph Gonzaga Sewungu ( National Unity Platform)was declared a winner on a difference of 46 votes.

The trial Magistrate, Chief Magistrate Albert Asiimwe ruled that this recount will be conducted on Friday 23rd January 2026, at the Kalungu District Magistrate Grade One Court.

Before this ruling, Court dismissed all the objections which had been raised by Sewungu’s lawyers led by Caleb Alaka.

Ismail Ssemakula petitioned Court challenging the declaration of results in which Ssewungu was announced the winner with a slim margin of 46 votes and on this, the applicant blamed the Returning officer and Presiding officers officers at various polling stations for ignoring arithmetical errors which favored Ssewungu.
