The Founding Speaker and Chairman of the Pan-African Pyramid, Andrew Irumba Katusabe, has called for a renewed commitment to African unity, economic independence, and continental solidarity, warning that Africa risks betraying the ideals of its liberation heroes if divisions and foreign dependence continue unchecked.
Speaking during Africa Liberation Day celebrations held at Phaneroo Grounds in Naguru, Kampala on Monday evening, Irumba delivered a passionate address reflecting on the achievements, failures, and future of the Pan-African movement.
Addressing guests, activists, and members of the African diaspora, Irumba said Africa Liberation Day should not only be a moment of celebration but also a time for deep introspection about whether the continent has fulfilled the dreams of its founding fathers.
“We are not merely celebrating a date on a calendar. We are standing in the shadow of giants. We are standing on the sacrifices of men and women who believed that Africa deserved dignity, sovereignty, unity, and destiny,” Irumba said.
He noted that although many African countries attained political independence decades ago, the continent still faces economic dependence, exploitation of natural resources, and barriers that continue to divide Africans.
“Can we call ourselves fully liberated when Africa remains rich in minerals yet poor in ownership?” he asked. “Can we call ourselves united when Africans need visas to visit fellow Africans?”
Irumba also condemned the growing wave of Afro-phobia in parts of Africa, particularly in South Africa, describing it as a betrayal of Pan-African ideals and the sacrifices made by freedom fighters across the continent.
“In South Africa, a nation whose freedom was defended by the blood, voices, sanctions, and solidarity of the entire continent, we are witnessing rising Afro-phobia. Africans are being told they are foreigners in Africa,” he said.
“How did we reach a point where an African can become illegal on African soil?” he added.
During the speech, Irumba paid tribute to iconic African liberation leaders including Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, Patrice Lumumba, Thomas Sankara, Nelson Mandela, Muammar Gaddafi and Haile Selassie, saying their vision of a united Africa must not be forgotten.
Quoting Ghana’s first president, Irumba reminded attendees that, “The forces that unite us are intrinsic and greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart.”
He emphasized that the next phase of Africa’s liberation struggle must focus on mental, economic, technological, cultural, and spiritual emancipation.
“The generation before us fought to remove colonial rulers. Our generation must fight to remove colonial thinking,” Irumba said.
He also announced that the Pan African Pyramid Global Awards 2026 will take place on August 29 at Speke Resort Munyonyo, describing the annual event as a platform to celebrate African achievements while finding homegrown solutions to continental challenges.
“This year’s awards ceremony will take place in August 29, 2026, at Speke Resort Munyonyo and you’re all welcome,” he said.
Irumba concluded his address with a strong appeal for continental unity, urging Africans to rise above borders and divisions.
“Africa must rise again not against each other, but together. One Africa. One destiny. One people,” he declared.
The Africa Day celebrations attracted Pan-African advocates, youth leaders, cultural enthusiasts, and members of civil society from different parts of Uganda and the African diaspora.
