African Games: Upsets For Uganda Chess Team

0

Chess events at the ongoing African Games in Ghana ended on Monday with upsetting outcomes for both Fide Master Harold Wanyama and Peninah Nakabo- the two Ugandan representatives.

The Mixed Team Blitz that had Uganda finish eighth with nine points concluded the six events, but the Ugandan duo will feel unlucky to have failed to win a medal.

Uganda finished 12th in the Mixed Team Rapid with five points, but the duo each came close to a medal in the individual Rapids.

Wanyama is no alien to winning medals at this competition. He bagged a bronze in the Men’s Rapid in 2019, however, painfully missed out on one by half a point in the same event on Sunday.

It was the same for Nakabo. The expectant mother is debuting at this tournament, but came close to a bronze, missing out by just a point in the Women’s Rapid.

She ended up finishing sixth while Wanyama finished fifth. They leave empty handed however, with some positives. Wanyama rated 2117 in Rapids performed at a rating of 2305 while Nakabo rated 1768 performed at 1977.

The duo will not return home as yet. They will stay in Ghana for another 12 days as the African Individual Chess Championship- the biggest chess event in the continent- awaits.

The nine- round tournament that Uganda hosted in 2016 will pawn off on Wednesday at Accra International Conference Center.
