Dokolo, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Akena has paid tribute to the prominent party leaders in Dokolo, especially those who served within his Late father’s government.

Akena, accompanied by UPC top leaders on Saturday visited families of prominent party leaders who played a critical role in the Apollo Milton Obote-led administration as part of mobilization campaigns across the Lango sub-region.

He laid a wreath on the grave of Dr. Srylo Egwang, a presidential advisor in the Obote-I government who was killed by President Idi Amin for concealing information about Obote’s whereabouts shortly after the government was overthrown. At this home located along Lira Soroti Highway in Adok sub-county, Akena was ushered into a rooftop inside a house where the Late Obote would hold his meetings and leave using an undergrown tunnel.

He then proceeded to Agwata and Okwongodul Town Councils where he visited the graves of Adunia Olwa and Martia OKuja commonly referred to as Amendment Bill, and Ojede John Oryec. It is believed that the efforts of these UPC leaders led to the massive spread of the party in East Lango.

Addressing the families and his supporters, Akena said such people should be remembered, for their achievements are what Ugandans are currently reaping from.

Akena told supporters that he is tired of waiting for a better future and called upon the current generation to create the future they want by electing UPC in all leadership positions.

In their response, the families requested the party’s support in organizing memorial prayers and establishment of party officers in their areas.

Meanwhile, Dokolo District Chairperson James Otto Apili also rallied support for Akena saying unity will develop the Country. He pledged full commitment to working with him during his presidency, even though is serving as the Vice Chairman of the Forum for Democratic Change in Northern Uganda and the chairperson of the party’s disciplinary committee.

On the other hand, Simon Agelu, the Kalaki District UPC Chairperson applauded Akena for offering to walk in his father’s footsteps to rebuild Uganda.

“We hail you for this fatherly decision. It has been severe pain and shame for Uganda to suffer the cruel hands of the present regime,” he said.
