There is a common belief that heart patients eating eggs is not good for their health due to the high cholesterol they contain. However, recent research shows that the amount of cholesterol in foods does not have a high effect on blood cholesterol levels. Eggs, which were once considered responsible for cholesterol, do not harm the heart when consumed in moderation. Moreover, it contains many vitamins, folic acid and micronutrients that protect the heart. What actually increases cholesterol is; saturated and trans fats in foods and the sugar-starch content of the food. Egg yolk contains high amounts of cholesterol (on average 212 mg per egg). This cholesterol affects blood cholesterol to an extremely limited extent. Apart from cholesterol, eggs also contain high amounts of protein (6 g per egg), vitamins B2, B12 and D, folic acid and many other micronutrients, all of which protect against heart disease. These micronutrients include choline, which protects memory, and lutein, which prevents vision loss.

How should egg consumption be?

There is no harm in healthy individuals consuming one egg a day. For diabetics, one egg a day may increase the risk, albeit very slightly. Those with diabetes or those who have had a heart attack should eat more egg whites and should not consume egg yolks more than three times a week. However, just because eggs are not harmful does not mean that eggs with sausage or three-egg omelets are beneficial. Also, remember that eggs are used in cakes, cakes and many other foods.

Prefer boiled eggs

Instead of cooking eggs in oil, choose to boil them or cook them in water. After all, eggs are a useful food item if consumed carefully. As with all foods, conscious and moderate consumption is best.
