Dr. Eng. Michael Odongo Okune Calls for Reconciliation in Lango as He Wins Cultural Election

Patrick Okidi | Lira, (UG): Dr. Eng. Moses Odongo Okune has won with 91.1 percent in the election held on March 1, 2024, to elect the new Paramount Chief of Lango Cultural Foundation. Dr. Okune addressed thousands of voters and well-wishers who turned up at Akii-Bua Stadium to witness the election processes.

After winning the hotly contested election, which pitted Dr. Dan Okello against Dr. Engineer Moses Michael Odongo Okune for the position of Won Nyaci, the people of Lango were very happy for the peacefully conducted election, which was organized in a very orderly manner.

Odongo called upon all clan heads to lower themselves to the level of the subjects they lead, enabling them to start a new chapter after the colorful election. He stated that he has been humbling himself to the people of Lango during his recent administration over the last seven years.

Dr. Eng. Okune congratulated the former Won Nyaci, Yosam Odur Ebii, for bringing together all the clan leaders in Lango over the last twenty years, urging his subjects to come together and work without any differences.

Tom Otim, the chairperson of the Cultural Independent Electoral Commission, emphasized the need for unity among the people of Lango.

In the outcome of the election, Dr. Dan Okello of Guna clan garnered 139 votes (7.5 percent), while Dr. Eng. Moses Michael Odongo Okune won with 1,692 votes, equivalent to 91.1 percent. There were 27 invalid votes, and 1,831 valid votes were also counted by the Electoral Commission of the Lango Cultural Foundation.

“I, therefore, declare Dr. Eng. Moses Michael Odongo Okune as duly elected Lango Paramount Chief (Won Nyaci),” declared Otim Tom.

Willie Omodo Omodo, the speaker of Lango Cultural Foundation, stated that the council position is very clear, and Dr. Eng. Odongo Okune shall be sworn in after November 1, 2024, into office.

The Lira Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Emmy Egole Lawrence, addressing the gathering of voters and clan heads at Akii-Bua Stadium after the declaration of the election, emphasized that love, unity, and forgiveness should be the key priorities for the cultural leaders in Lango. He thanked Odur Yosam Ebii and urged Dr. Eng. Okune to take care of the outgoing Won Nyaci Yosam.

“Let us put aside all the differences that have torn the people of Lango apart,” said Egole.

Bishop Tom Ibrahim Okello of Elim Church said Lango is greater than anybody who is in a leadership position and prayed for unity.
