The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has suspended the issuance of all new visas for Ugandan nationals and imposed travel restrictions on arrivals from Uganda as part of measures aimed at preventing the spread of the Ebola virus.
In a joint statement issued by the UAE’s National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), the authorities announced that the directive took effect at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026.
The restrictions apply to Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and South Sudan, and cover all newly issued visas, including visit visas.
“The measures are part of the UAE’s proactive and preventive efforts to strengthen national preparedness and respond to developments related to the Ebola virus,” the statement said.
Under the new regulations, travelers arriving directly from the affected countries, as well as those who have recently transited through them, will not be permitted to enter the UAE. However, an exemption will be granted to travelers who have remained outside the three countries for more than 21 consecutive days prior to arrival, corresponding to the maximum incubation period of the Ebola virus.
The UAE authorities clarified that transit flight operations through the country and cargo services will continue without disruption.
Officials further stated that the restrictions may be extended depending on the evolution of the public health situation and ongoing risk assessments conducted in collaboration with international health partners.
The announcement comes amid continued monitoring of Ebola cases in the region. According to Uganda’s Ministry of Health, the country had recorded a cumulative total of 19 confirmed Ebola cases as of Saturday, June 6, 2026. The figure includes 14 imported cases and five Ugandan nationals.
Health officials reported that there were no new cases recorded in the latest update, a development that has been welcomed by public health authorities.
Of the confirmed cases, 13 patients remain under medical care, while four individuals have recovered and been discharged from treatment facilities. Two deaths have been recorded, both involving imported cases.
Despite the travel restrictions, Uganda’s Ministry of Health has maintained that the outbreak remains under control and that the country is safe. Authorities continue to conduct surveillance, contact tracing, and public awareness campaigns aimed at preventing further transmission.
The UAE’s decision is expected to affect travelers, businesspeople, and families with ties between the two countries, while health authorities continue efforts to contain the outbreak and restore confidence in international travel.
