Joseph Ayolo | Karenga, (UG):  Political pressure in Karenga district in the Karamoja region is heating up after hundreds of women declared support for the new contestant, Ms. Margaret Nalem, against Ethics State Minister Ms. Lily Akello.

A survey by this publication noted that the minister, who was a woman member of parliament for the then greater Kaabong district before shifting to Karenga district, had a significant following. However, voters started turning away from her after her involvement with State Minister for Karamoja, Agness Nadutu, who is accused of stealing iron sheets meant for Karimojong reformed warriors.

The Ankole Times also interacted with a number of voters in Karenga who said the minister has run short of ideas for the people. Instead, she has resorted to abusing civil servants and fighting with them.

On Monday this week, the minister allegedly attacked the town clerk of Karenga town council, Ms. Hellen Atim, a PhD holder, over unclear reasons. However, she was separated by other district officials.

Apart from attacking the town clerk, the minister also allegedly attacked the district councilor for Karenga sub-county, Mr. Daniel Ogwang, something that has not gone well with the public.

Peter Teko, a voter, said the recent actions of the minister have become a public nuisance.

“I watched them almost fighting, I just kept quiet and wondered why all that,” he said.

According to Mr. Teko, the minister could still regain the people’s support if she corrects the way she conducts herself.

Mark Lodou, another voter, said they want a change, adding that those who have overstayed in parliament should also step down and rest.

“When you overstay in the position, you will run short of development ideas so by the time a new person comes in things will be changed,” he said.

Several attempts to speak to the minister for comment on these allegations were futile as she kept her phone busy.
