In a thrilling start to the 2024/25 Uganda Premier League, Sam Ssenyonjo made an immediate impact, scoring twice on his debut to secure a 2-1 victory for Express over Mbale Heroes at the new Hamz Stadium in Nakivubo.

Ssenyonjo, who joined Express from Bright Stars during the off-season, found the back of the net twice in the second half.

His first goal came in the 55th minute when he capitalized on a smart pass from substitute Alpha Ssali to slot the ball in from close range.

Ssenyonjo doubled his tally in the 84th minute, neatly slotting in after he was put through by a header from Michael Kimera.

Mbale Heroes managed to pull one back in the 86th minute through Hakim Musabbah, who pounced on a loose ball following a poorly cleared freekick.

Despite their late surge, Mbale Heroes, who were making their return to the top flight after 17 years, couldn’t turn the game around.

In the first half, Mbale Heroes, under the guidance of coach Henry Malinga, appeared to be the stronger side and dominated possession.

They missed key opportunities, including a big save by Express goalkeeper Michael Kagiri against Jeremy Matata.
