The Mwanga 2 Chief Magistrates Court has remanded five suspects on charges of murdering Engineer Daniel Bbossa, the head of the Ndiga Clan in the Buganda Kingdom.

The suspects are Noah Lujja, a resident of Kabanga Village, Mpigi Town Council in Mpigi, Harriet Nakiguli, a resident of Nkere Corner Zone, Kawempe Division in Kampala District, Joseph Nakabale, a carpenter residing in Gala, Mpigi Town Council, Ezra Mayanja, a carpenter residing in Kiganda Zone, Kawempe and Milly Naluwenda, the Secretary to the Kisekwa Cultural Court of Buganda, residing in Kitunzi Zone 7, Rubaga Division, Kampala District.

The suspects appeared before the Senior Principal Grade One Magistrate Adams Byarugaba on Monday who read for them one count of murder contrary to sections 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act. The Prosecution, represented by Caroline Mpumwire, informed the Court that investigations were ongoing and requested an adjournment.

Byarugaba advised the accused not to make any statements regarding the charges because his court lacks the jurisdiction to try offenses of a capital nature. He subsequently remanded the accused persons until April 11th, 2024. The accused were brought to Court under tight security, with some like Lujja, who had been bedridden at Mulago Hospital, having difficulty walking due to suspected injuries sustained at the scene of the crime.

Lujja escaped with injuries, while one suspect died at the scene and another is reportedly being pursued by the police. The accused, especially the female suspects, appeared emotional upon arrival at court but composed during the proceedings. Before Bbossa’s death, there had been a longstanding dispute within the Kingdom, dating back over 480 years, leading to the Buganda Cultural Court, known as Court Yakisekwa, directing Bbossa to step down from leadership due to lineage discrepancies among the clan’s true descendants.
