Former Miss Rwanda Jolly Mutesi has instructed her lawyers to pursue legal action against Ugandan musician Bebe Cool following allegations linking her to an alleged online fraud scheme.Mutesi, who has built a public profile through pageantry, advocacy for women and girls, and the promotion of Rwanda on international platforms, has strongly denied claims made by the singer on social media.
Speaking to this publication, Mutesi dismissed assertions by Bebe Cool that the two had met in London or at Emirates Stadium.“I don’t know him personally and I’ve never met him,” she said, rejecting the musician’s account of events.
She also criticized what she described as attempts to gain attention at the expense of another person’s reputation.“I am not interested in cheap popularity over people’s reputation,” she said.
In a public statement, Mutesi said she had referred the matter to her legal team and intended to address the allegations through the appropriate legal channels.“To the general public, I would like to tell you that I didn’t take allegations made by Moses Ssali, aka Bebe Cool, lightly and, in the interest of ensuring that all matters are handled appropriately, I have formally referred this matter to my legal counsel,” she said.
The dispute stems from a series of posts published by Bebe Cool on X, formerly Twitter, in which he claimed he had been defrauded by individuals allegedly connected to Mutesi.
The singer said he had engaged in WhatsApp conversations with a person purporting to be the former beauty queen and shared screenshots that he claimed supported his allegations.
According to the musician, the individual used photographs of Mutesi and allegedly promised assistance in securing opportunities for his son at Arsenal Football Club’s academy, as well as connections to promote his music career in the United Kingdom.
The person allegedly claimed to hold influential connections in Rwanda and boasted of direct access to Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
However, Mutesi has consistently denied any involvement and maintains that she has been a victim of impersonation. In 2024, she publicly warned followers about fraudulent accounts operating under her name and urged the public not to engage with unverified contacts seeking money or personal information.
Her legal team argues that the telephone number cited by Bebe Cool had previously been reported by third parties as belonging to fraudsters impersonating her identity.
Lawyers representing Mutesi contend that the singer’s posts on his verified social media accounts caused reputational damage and were published without proper verification. They further allege that the publications were made with express malice.
The legal notice reportedly demands that Bebe Cool immediately cease publishing the allegations, retract the statements, and issue a public apology in a form approved by Mutesi’s legal representatives.
Despite the legal threat, Bebe Cool has maintained his position, insisting that his claims are based on direct communications and screenshots in his possession. The musician has also called for investigations into the matter and says additional evidence will be released. He has further alleged that several individuals may be involved in what he describes as a broader fraud network.
Those claims, however, have not been independently verified. The dispute is expected to test the legal boundaries of online allegations, defamation, and identity impersonation, with both sides standing firmly by their respective accounts.
