At least 132,943 employment positions are currently available at the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) in preparation for the upcoming National Population and Housing census scheduled for May. This massive recruitment drive includes 114,460 census enumerators and 18,483 census enumeration supervisors. Interested individuals have the opportunity to apply online until March 15, as announced by UBOS in a recent job advertisement released last Friday.

The roles of census enumeration supervisors involve overseeing the census process within their assigned areas, ensuring effective supervision of the enumeration exercise. Enumerators, on the other hand, will be responsible for conducting the census enumeration in the designated enumeration areas. These positions require dynamic, experienced, and competent individuals who will play critical roles in the successful execution of the census exercise.

UBOS, a semi-autonomous body, is tasked with implementing the National Population and Housing Census (NPHC) 2024 from May 10 to May 19, with May 9 designated as census night. The census results are expected to provide essential socio-demographic data at various administrative levels, vital for both general administration and the planning process.

Mr. Didacus Okoth, the spokesperson for UBOS, expressed confidence in the readiness of the recruitment exercise, highlighting that the necessary infrastructure is already in place to facilitate the online application process. District officials will undergo training to oversee recruitment at the district level and select qualified candidates. Successful applicants will receive training on the use of census gadgets, as the exercise will primarily rely on digital technology.

To ensure transparency and integrity throughout the recruitment process, Mr. Okoth emphasized the importance of district leaders maintaining honesty and transparency. While acknowledging the possibility of bribery attempts, efforts will be made to sensitize the community to prevent such incidences and uphold the integrity of the recruitment process.

The upcoming census marks a significant milestone as it will be the first to utilize digital technology for data collection and processing. UBOS anticipates that the digital system will enable the production of accurate and timely demographic, social, and economic statistics, essential for informed decision-making and development planning.

With over 133,000 job opportunities available, the census recruitment presents a unique chance for individuals to contribute to the data collection process and play a vital role in shaping Uganda’s future development trajectory. As the country gears up for this crucial exercise, the call for dynamic and competent individuals to join the census team echoes across the nation, offering promising prospects for employment and meaningful participation in national development efforts.
