The body of Timothy Muganzi Magambo, the son of Uganda’s Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) Director Tom Magambo Rwabudongo, has been returned to Uganda ahead of his burial scheduled for Thursday in Masindi District.
Timothy’s remains arrived at Entebbe International Airport in the early hours of Tuesday morning at around 2:00am, where they were received by family members, close friends and government officials.
Among those present at the airport was Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, the Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, who joined the grieving family in receiving the body.
Timothy died on Saturday, May 16, 2026, following a drowning incident near Shelter Island on Long Island in New York City.
According to reports from U.S. authorities and local media, the young Ugandan was among a group of seven people swimming from Wades Beach to Shell Beach when he reportedly became separated from his friends.
Authorities said Timothy later attempted to swim back toward Wades Beach before his disappearance was noticed by the group, prompting an emergency search operation.
He was later discovered floating face down several hundred yards from where he had last been seen.
Bystanders reportedly pulled him from the water and attempted emergency rescue efforts before he was rushed to South Shore University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from drowning-related injuries.
Minister Balaam revealed that a requiem Mass for Timothy will be held on Wednesday morning at 9:00am at Mbuya Catholic Parish before the body is transported to the family home in Kisarabwire Village, Masindi Municipality, for an overnight vigil.
Burial arrangements indicate that Timothy will be laid to rest on Thursday at 2:00pm in Kisarabwire, located about two kilometres from Masindi Municipality.
Friends and relatives have continued to describe Timothy as a bright and promising young man whose life was cut short at an early age.
He studied at Pelham Memorial High School, where he actively participated in lacrosse and graduated in 2025.
Following his high school education, Timothy had recently been admitted to the State University of New York at Albany to pursue studies in business.
Messages of condolence have continued pouring in from friends, leaders and members of the public as the Magambo family prepares to lay the young student to rest.
