Heathens, Pirates Rugby Championship Final Gets Venue

The Uganda Rugby Union has officially confirmed that the highly anticipated 2024 Rugby Championship final will be hosted at Kyadondo Rugby Club on June 1, 2024.

This announcement quashes earlier reports suggesting that the final would take place at Namboole.

Initial plans had considered using Namboole’s outside pitch for the final, as a precursor to the 2024 Rugby Africa Cup, which Uganda is set to host at the same venue later this year.

However, Kyadondo, a traditional rugby stronghold, has been chosen to stage the grand finale.

The venue is home for Heathens, thus giving the side home advantage!

In a statement released on Monday evening, the Uganda Rugby Union emphasized that the final will be a single-match showdown, a departure from the multi-leg format used in the season’s earlier playoff rounds.

The road to the final saw the Heathens narrowly lose to the KOBs 13-18 in the second leg of the semifinals at Kyadondo on Saturday. Despite this loss, the Heathens secured their spot in the final with a 42-36 aggregate victory, thanks to their commanding 29-18 win in the first leg at Legends ground.

The Pirates’ journey was equally dramatic. After a tight 27-28 loss in the first leg against the Hippos at Dam Waters in Jinja, the Pirates fought back with a thrilling 27-23 victory at Kings Park Arena in Bweyogerere, earning their place in the final through sheer determination.
