More than 50 families in Hoima district are homeless after they were displaced by heavy rains.  The heavy downpour coupled with strong wind left the rooftops of several houses blown off destroying household properties and plantations on Wednesday.

Residents have lost garden crops including banana plantations, cassava, and sweet potatoes among others that were destroyed by the heavy downpour coupled with a hailstorm.    The most affected villages are Kasenyi-Lyato, Kicora, and Chongambe in Nyakabingo parish of Buseruka sub-county.

The residents say that the magnitude of the destruction is likely to trigger famine since all their garden crops have been destroyed.  They have called on the Office of the Prime Minister-OPM to provide them with relief food since they are likely to starve.

Ester Akutu, a resident of Kasenyi-Lyato says the heavy downpour coupled with strong wind deroofed her house. She is currently sleeping out in the cold together with her children. She appealed to the government to intervene and avail them of relief items.

Jimmy Baguma, another resident explains that he lost an acre of banana plantation during the heavy downpour. He says the area is likely to experience acute famine since crop gardens have been destroyed.

Ali Tinkamanyire, the Buseruka sub-county LCIII Chairperson says that are currently compiling a list of the affected persons together with the destroyed property so that their particulars can be availed to the district disaster management committee, which will forward them to the office of the prime minister for consideration.

He has appealed to the victims to be patient as the government is doing all it can to put the situation under control.

Pius Wakabi, Bugahya County Member of Parliament, calls for immediate government intervention to rescue the situation by availing the affected persons with relief items.
