On March, 8, 2024, as Uganda joined the rest of the world to celebrate Women’s Day, Busiro County East MP, Medard Sseggona used this holiday to take his vehicle for a wash at one of the washing bays near the Rubaga Cathedral.
“In the back seat of the vehicle was a bag containing shs118 million . Since he had always used the same washing bay, the MP left the vehicle with the car washers and asked them to do as they always did,” a source privy to the matter told this website.
However, when one of the boys contracted to wash the vehicle noticed the bag full of cash, he called on colleagues, as manna had fallen from heaven.
This was a golden opportunity for the group to become “filthy rich” and in no minute.
“The boys didn’t even attempt to wash the vehicle. They just took off and left the vehicle as it was,” the source added.
Later in the day, when Sseggona, the chairperson of COSASE in parliament returned to pick his vehicle and didn’t notice that the money had been taken and neither did he notice that the vehicle had not been washed.
“He only realized the money was missing from the car after reaching home but it was later and he could not return to the washing bay.”
Another source privy to the matter told this website that the following day, March, 9, a Saturday, the legislator, who is vocal in the fight against corruption returned to the washing bay and asked the proprietors to help him arrest the “boys” who had stolen his money.
“He didn’t want to report the matter to police and sought to have the managers of the washing to help him arrest the culprits and recover the money,” the source told this website.
Meanwhile, having realized that his efforts could not yield anything, he reported the matter to Rubaga police post that kicked off investigations into the matter.
The arrest
Meanwhile, police started investigations into the matter and operatives from the Crime Intelligence Directorate and the Flying Squad Unit started tracking the three suspects involved in the robbery.
They were later arrested on Tuesday from Kinaawa after Nateete leading to the recovery of shs35 million which was found kept in the ceiling of one of the houses.
“The police has also recovered another shs50 million to make it shs85 million recovered from the three suspects,” Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire told this website.
He said the hunt is on for the remaining cash, noting that the suspects are providing good leads on the whereabouts of the cash which is yet to be recovered.
