Newly appointed Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Sanjay Tanna has moved to address public concerns surrounding his citizenship status, stating that he holds only one passport and is solely a citizen of Uganda.
Tanna’s remarks come amid heightened public discussion following a recent letter attributed to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni seeking verification of the citizenship status of several newly appointed government officials. The debate has also been fueled by social media speculation and a petition reportedly submitted to the Parliament of Uganda Appointments Committee, questioning whether some nominees may hold undisclosed foreign citizenship.
Under Ugandan law, individuals holding dual citizenship are prohibited from serving as Cabinet Ministers, making citizenship verification a matter of significant public and legal interest.
Responding to the scrutiny, Tanna emphasized that he is exclusively Ugandan and possesses only one passport.
“I have one passport,” Tanna said, dismissing claims that he holds citizenship of another country.
The minister-designate noted that his long record in public service has consistently required verification of his citizenship credentials. Tanna previously served two terms as Member of Parliament for Tororo Municipality, a position that subjected him to electoral and legal vetting processes confirming his eligibility under Ugandan law.
Political observers say the clarification is likely to feature prominently during the ongoing vetting process for Cabinet nominees, as lawmakers seek assurances that all appointments comply with constitutional requirements.
The citizenship debate has attracted widespread public attention, with many Ugandans calling for transparency and thorough verification of public officials entrusted with senior government positions.
As the vetting process continues, Tanna has maintained that there is no ambiguity regarding his nationality, reiterating that he is a Ugandan citizen and holds no other citizenship.
