Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP), clarified the selection process behind his new aide, Brenda Keijagye, who happens to be the sister-in-law of Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, commonly known as Bobi Wine, the president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) In response to inquiries regarding his recent appointment.
Addressing parliamentary journalists during a session focused on addressing corruption allegations within Parliament, Ssenyonyi provided insights into the circumstances leading to Keijagye’s appointment.
The decision to appoint Keijagye arose after two initial candidates, including one named Faisal, were deemed unsuitable for the position. Ssenyonyi explained that the first candidate faced rejection due to ongoing legal issues related to their involvement in an incident in Kalangala. Despite being qualified, concerns were raised about their legal situation, which Ssenyonyi argued violated the presumption of innocence enshrined in Article 28(3) of the constitution.
The second candidate, according to Ssenyonyi, was deliberately sabotaged due to baseless allegations that their appointment would impact a specific Member of Parliament’s electoral prospects. This incident left Ssenyonyi with no alternative but to consider Keijagye for the role.

Keijagye, who joined Parliament in 2021 as a policy analyst alongside five others, had previously worked under the office of the former Leader of Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga. While her colleagues did not have their contracts renewed towards the end of Mpuuga’s tenure, Keijagye continued in her position.
A graduate in community psychology, Keijagye is married to Innocent Karuhanga Kabwisho. Kabwisho, who contested for the Kashari North seat as an independent candidate in 2021, lost to the National Resistance Movement’s Basil Bataringaya Rwankwene.
