Journalist Male Deogratius Seeks Asylum in Canada After Attack Over LGBTQ Advocacy

Renowned journalist Male Deogratius, also known as Omusawo Tintah, has fled Uganda for Canada after being attacked near his home in Kampala.

Male Deogratius, a well-known figure in both Hoima post and Metro FM, was assaulted by unidentified assailants on April 15, 2024, around 10 PM local time in Kubadongo, Salama Road, Makindye Division Council. The attackers severely beat him, prompting his urgent hospitalization at Good Samaritan Clinic in Makindye.

Reports indicate that Male Deogratius departed Uganda for Canada on Sunday, seeking asylum due to threats and intimidation from his assailants. The attackers, who stole nothing during the assault, warned Male Deogratius to cease his advocacy for human rights and LGBTQ rights on his website, “www.hoimapost.co.ug.” They threatened to harm him and his family if he continued his activism.

Male Deogratius had previously received threatening messages from unknown individuals, urging him to halt his advocacy efforts. These messages intensified following the attack, adding to concerns for his safety.

The incident highlights the risks faced by journalists and activists in Uganda, particularly those advocating for LGBTQ rights. Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Law, enacted in May 2023, imposes life imprisonment for consensual same-sex relations. Additionally, individuals found distributing material deemed to “promote or encourage homosexuality” face up to 20 years in prison, posing significant challenges for press freedom and LGBTQ advocacy.

Male Deogratius, known for his dedication to human rights issues, has become a symbol of the dangers faced by journalists and activists in Uganda. His decision to seek asylum underscores the urgent need for international support and protection for those fighting for LGBTQ rights and press freedom in the country.
