Central Division Mayor Joram Bintamanya has directed law enforcement officers to arrest all vendors conducting business outside Kabundaire Market, citing growing concerns from traders operating within the market premises.
The directive follows complaints from market vendors who say their businesses are suffering due to a decline in customer traffic. According to the traders, many buyers prefer purchasing goods from vendors operating along the streets and outside designated market areas, leading to reduced sales for those paying to operate inside the market.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting at Kabundaire Market on Thursday afternoon, Mayor Bintamanya said the situation has created unfair competition and undermined efforts to organize trade within the market.
“The vendors inside the market have expressed concerns over low customer turnout because many buyers are choosing to purchase goods from traders operating outside the market,” Bintamanya said. “This has negatively affected business for those operating within the designated market space.”
Traders also raised concerns about inadequate stall space within the market, arguing that the limited capacity restricts business growth and expansion opportunities for vendors seeking to increase their operations.
In addition to addressing illegal vending, the mayor revealed allegations that some enforcement officers have been soliciting bribes from vendors operating outside the market in exchange for allowing them to continue their activities.
Bintamanya condemned the reported acts of corruption and warned that his office would take firm action against any officials found engaging in such practices.
“We shall not tolerate corruption among enforcement officers. Any individual implicated in soliciting or receiving bribes will face the necessary disciplinary and legal action,” he said.
The meeting brought together market stakeholders to discuss challenges affecting business operations and identify solutions aimed at improving trade and restoring order at Kabundaire Market.
The mayor’s directive is expected to intensify enforcement efforts as authorities seek to streamline market operations and address concerns raised by traders.
