According to a UN spokesperson on Thursday, five nations have committed to providing personnel for an international police force to assist Haiti in its battle against gang violence.

Stephane Dujarric, the chief spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, announced that the UN received official confirmation from Benin on Wednesday regarding their commitment to support the Multinational Security Support mission with 1,500 uniformed personnel.

As of now, the United Nations has received notifications of intent from a total of five countries. The remaining four countries offering support are The Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, and Chad.

Initially, Kenya was the first nation to express its intent to assist the Haiti police force with 1,000 personnel to restore law and order in the Caribbean nation. However, a Kenyan court intervened and blocked the action. The government is currently appealing the decision.

Dujarric highlighted that contributions amounting to 10.8 million U.S. dollars have already been deposited into the Haiti Trust Fund to help finance the Security Council-authorized mission, with an additional pledge of 78 million dollars made for the fund.

“We encourage member states to continue contributing to ensure the successful deployment of the mission,” Dujarric emphasized.

The Security Council adopted a resolution in October 2023 to authorize the multinational police force for Haiti. The resolution stipulates that the expenses of implementing this temporary operation will be covered by voluntary contributions and support from individual member states and regional organizations.
