Kenya and Uganda are on the verge of inaugurating a significant initiative aimed at revolutionizing cross-border trade between the two neighboring countries. The collaborative effort, known as the One-Stop Border Post, is set to debut at the Suam border point in Trans Nzoia, situated along the Kenya-Uganda border.

President William Ruto of Kenya revealed the imminent launch of the One-Stop Border Post during his address at the official opening of the 3rd sitting of the 3rd session of the 5th East African Legislative Assembly (EALA). Ruto emphasized the importance of this initiative in facilitating smoother trade operations between Kenya and Uganda.

The Suam border post, funded by the African Finance Development Bank and supported by the China State Engineering Construction Corporation, represents a significant step towards enhancing efficiency in transporting and clearing goods across the border. It will integrate various essential services such as immigration, customs, security, and sanitary inspections into a centralized location, streamlining the trade process for businesses on both sides of the border.

In addition to the establishment of the One-Stop Border Post, the project encompasses the modernization of the Suam-Bukwo-Kapchorwa road infrastructure. This upgrade is designed to complement the efficiency of the Suam crossing, bolstering the local economy and alleviating congestion at the primary border facilities of Busia and Malaba.

President Ruto attributed the successful implementation of the project to the progressive policies and legislation championed by EALA. He highlighted the role of EALA in addressing barriers to regional integration, particularly through the establishment of frameworks for a common external tariff, uniform customs rules, procedures, and rules of origin.

The primary objective of the One-Stop Border Post initiative is to enhance trade facilitation between Kenya and Uganda, fostering closer economic ties and mutual benefits for both countries. By consolidating immigration, customs, security, and sanitation checks at a single location, the upgraded post promises to expedite cross-border transactions and promote greater efficiency in trade operations.
