Mr. Benson Dila Oyuku, the Chairman of Oyam LC5, faced removal from his position as the Council of Owitong Speaker during a dramatic session convened at the Lango Cultural Centre. This decision comes amidst accusations of incompetence leveled against Mr. Dila.

Dozens of Lango clan leaders convened on Monday to deliberate on Mr. Dila’s fate, just five days before the eagerly awaited election of a new paramount chief. The session, marked by tension and deliberation, culminated in Mr. Dila’s ousting from his role as Speaker.

The motion to declare Mr. Dila’s seat vacant was initiated by Mr. George Ojwang Opota, the Omolacol Odyek Onywal Iceng clan head. This motion found support from two other influential clan heads, Dr. Bosco Oruro and Bosco Ogwang Edola, further solidifying the decision to remove Mr. Dila from his position.

In a swift succession of events, Willy Omodo Omodo, representing the Pedi Wibye Acel clan, emerged as the nominee to fill the vacant seat left by Mr. Dila. Dr. Oruro, showing trust in Mr. Omodo Omodo’s leadership, was nominated and seconded to serve as his deputy.

Mr. Omodo Omodo brings with him a wealth of experience, having previously served as the speaker of the now-defunct Tekwaro Lango cultural institution, where Eng Dr. Moses Michael Odongo Okune held the esteemed position of paramount chief.

During the council session on Monday, it was unanimously decided that the 2016 constitution of the Lango Cultural Foundation would not govern the upcoming election of the new paramount chief, slated for Friday, March 1. This decision indicates a shift in the institutional framework guiding leadership transitions within the Lango cultural sphere.

To oversee the electoral process with fairness and transparency, Caroline Edongo and former Lira LC5 chairman Alex Oremo Alot were appointed as commissioners of the Lango cultural institution’s Electoral Commission. Heading this commission is Mr. Tom Otim, the former head teacher of Layibi College in Gulu City, bringing his experience in educational leadership to the electoral process.

Despite the ongoing changes in leadership, Dr. Odongo Okune, former executive director of the Uganda Road Fund (URF), has expressed interest in assuming the position of paramount chief. Notably, all clan heads remain eligible for election to this esteemed position.
