Okidi Patrick | Luwero, (Uganda) : Suspected land grabber and UPDF soldier survive lynching due to eviction of bibanja holders in Zirobwe sub-county, Luwero district. Angry residents of Wabutungulu village in Zirobwe sub-county nearly killed a UPDF soldier called Major Lumala Suraje and a suspected land fraudster called Hajji Mpungu Kafumbe Ali for demolishing their houses and destroying their crops in order to grab their land in Wabutungulu village in Zirobwe sub-county of Luwero district.
The angry residents accused their leaders, who include the chairperson of the LC1 and LC3, of conniving with the land grabbers. This was during a meeting convened by the RDC of Luwero, Mr. Bwabye Richard, at the site where Major Lumala Suraje and Hajji Mpungu Kafumbe demolished the houses and evicted the bibanja holders using a grader.
The residents accused their leaders of confusing the RDC by taking him to Zirobwe sub-county headquarters instead of the site as stated in the RDC’s letter inviting the community and leaders.
The aggrieved bibanja holders stormed the meeting at the sub-county and demanded the RDC to go to the area where Mpungu Kafumbe and Major Lumala had evicted them and destroyed their property.

The RDC agreed with the angry residents and proceeded to the place where people’s houses were demolished and crops destroyed. The charged residents wanted to lynch Hajji Mpungu and Major Lumala who mysteriously disappeared. The RDC ordered police to arrest and investigate the suspected land grabbers.
He directed the bibanja holders to go back to their bibanja. The people called for the arrest of Hajji Mpungu Kafumbe and Major Lumala Suraje and requested compensation for the damages caused by the UPDF during the eviction.
They asked the government to take interest in the matter because Hajji Mpungu Kafumbe Ali has become a rampant fraudster and is evicting bibanja holders in several parts of Luwero and Wakiso District, calling himself untouchable and well-connected.
The RDC of Luwero district, Mr. Richard Bwabye, has told The Ankole Times newspaper on Wednesday morning that he has ordered the police to arrest Major Lumala Suraje and Haji Mpungu Kafumbe immediately and to have the grader parked at Luwero Central Police Station (CPS).
RDC Richard also confirmed that he has also ordered the 150 people who were evicted from their bibanja land to return back to their land.
