The Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Hon. Sanjay Tanna, and the State Minister for Industry, Hon. David Bahati, have toured key manufacturing plants in the Kampala Industrial and Business Park, Namanve, as the government intensifies efforts to accelerate industrialisation and achieve Uganda’s ambitious target of growing the economy tenfold by 2040.
The ministers participated in the Second Presidential CEO Forum Information Tour, held under the theme, “Amplifying Uganda’s Industrial Agenda for a Ten-Fold Growth Economy.” The initiative was organised in partnership with the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA).
As part of the tour, the ministers and other government officials visited four major manufacturing firms: Ntake Edible Oil Refinery, Luuka Plastics, Steel and Tube Industries, and Staunch Machinery.
The visits provided an opportunity for government leaders to assess Uganda’s industrial progress firsthand while engaging manufacturers on the role of the private sector in driving economic transformation and job creation.
During the engagements, manufacturers highlighted several challenges affecting productivity, including unreliable electricity supply and poor road infrastructure, saying the bottlenecks continue to increase production costs, delay deliveries and disrupt supply chains.
Hon. Tanna commended the investors for their confidence in Uganda and their continued contribution to the country’s industrial development.
He encouraged manufacturers to embrace clean and renewable energy solutions, particularly solar power, to complement the government’s Net Metering Initiative, which seeks to improve energy efficiency and reduce production costs.
The minister also called for greater investment in local skills development through apprenticeship and vocational training programmes, saying strengthening the country’s industrial workforce would help tackle youth unemployment while enhancing productivity.
Hon. Bahati praised the manufacturers for their significant contribution to Uganda’s economy, noting that the four industries alone contribute approximately Shs250 billion in tax revenue annually and provide employment to more than 3,000 Ugandans.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining an open investment environment and urged both public and private sector players to work together in addressing challenges affecting industrial growth.
The two ministers assured manufacturers that the government would take steps to resolve the infrastructure and energy challenges raised during the tour while encouraging the private sector to continue investing in innovative solutions that enhance competitiveness.
The Presidential CEO Forum Information Tour forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen collaboration with the private sector and position industrialisation as a key driver of Uganda’s long-term economic transformation under the country’s vision of achieving a ten-fold economic expansion by 2040.
