Maroons, UPDF Share Spoils in Thrilling Derby of Forces

The Uganda Premier League opener between Maroons FC and UPDF FC concluded in a thrilling 1-1 draw at the Luzira Prisons Ground.

Late goals from Jackson Nunda and Zzinda Hussein ensured both teams began the season with a point.

Both sides had scoring chances in the first half but failed to capitalize. Mujahid Ogama and Ibrahim Dada missed opportunities for Maroons, while Joseph Janjali and Samuel Ssekamatte’s efforts went over the bar for UPDF FC.

The breakthrough came in the 83rd minute when Nunda’s thunderous strike put Maroons ahead, sparking celebrations among the home fans.

However, UPDF FC responded quickly. Substitute Samson Kigozi’s shot was parried by goalkeeper Hassan Matovu into the path of Zzinda Hussein, who scored the equalizer in the 89th minute.

The late drama ensured that the Derby of Forces ended in a draw, leaving both teams to reflect on what might have been. Maroons FC and UPDF FC can take encouragement from their performances and look forward to improving as the season progresses.
