Muslims residing in Mbarara, led by Sheikh Mohammad Mukwaya, the District Khadi, have raised objections regarding what they perceive as unequal treatment and discrimination in government pledges for infrastructure development compared to other religious groups in the area.

According to Sheikh Mukwaya, while other religious centers such as Nyamitanga Cathedral and Ruharo Cathedral have seen progress in infrastructure development, including road construction through presidential pledges, the Muslim community, particularly centered around Madrasat Nuruh Mosque in Nyamitanga, feels neglected and marginalized by the government.

The disparity in infrastructure development has led to disillusionment among Muslims towards the ruling NRM government, as they feel their needs are not being adequately addressed or considered.

Highlighting the importance of equitable treatment, Sheikh Mukwaya emphasized the need for government support, particularly in improving roads and infrastructure around Nyamitanga Islamic Center, which hosts several schools including Nyamitanga Muslim Primary School, Madrasat Nuruh P/S, Nyamitanga Muslim Secondary School, and Shuhadah Islamic Secondary School.

Expressing their grievances during the launch of the construction of staff quarters at Nyamitanga Muslim Primary School, Sheikh Mukwaya urged the government to extend similar development initiatives to the Muslim community as it does to other religious groups in the area.

The construction project, which involves the building of six self-contained rooms for teachers’ accommodation, is part of a larger development grant of Shs153M from the Central Government allocated for the school.

Confirming the allocation of funds for the project, Didas Muhanguzi, Mbarara City South Division Town Clerk, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in educational institutions, including those affiliated with the Islamic foundation.

The launch of the construction project was attended by key stakeholders, including Mbarara City South RCC Robert Kanusu, Mbarara City Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi, Muslim Leadership, and the leadership of Mbarara City South Division.

Mayor Kakyebezi emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the execution of the project, warning against any mismanagement or embezzlement of funds by the involved parties.
