President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has expressed heartfelt condolences following the passing of Ali Hassan Mwinyi, the former President of Tanzania. Mwinyi, who passed away at the age of 98 after battling lung cancer, served as Tanzania’s second president from 1985 to 1995. He was a pivotal figure in Tanzanian politics, notably becoming the first leader to serve as President for both Zanzibar and the United Republic of Tanzania.
Leaders from across Africa, alongside Tanzanians, have united in mourning the loss of the former president, who was laid to rest on Saturday evening in Zanzibar.
In his tribute, President Museveni reflected on his enduring relationship with Mwinyi and Tanzania’s first president, Julius Nyerere, spanning several decades. He recalled joint initiatives, such as the commissioning of a hydro-power station and the establishment of cross-border infrastructure projects aimed at fostering regional integration and development.
During tumultuous times, including the Rwanda war, Tanzania, under Mwinyi’s leadership, played a constructive and neutral role, facilitating peace negotiations and contributing to regional stability.
President Museveni concluded his tribute by acknowledging Mwinyi’s profound impact within Tanzania and extending heartfelt condolences to his family and Tanzanian comrades.
