President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has expressed heartfelt condolences following the passing of Ali Hassan Mwinyi, the former President of Tanzania. Mwinyi, who passed away at the age of 98 after battling lung cancer, served as Tanzania’s second president from 1985 to 1995. He was a pivotal figure in Tanzanian politics, notably becoming the first leader to serve as President for both Zanzibar and the United Republic of Tanzania.

Leaders from across Africa, alongside Tanzanians, have united in mourning the loss of the former president, who was laid to rest on Saturday evening in Zanzibar.

In his tribute, President Museveni reflected on his enduring relationship with Mwinyi and Tanzania’s first president, Julius Nyerere, spanning several decades. He praised Mwinyi’s positive contributions to the East African region and Uganda’s future, acknowledging his pivotal role in various spheres of cooperation and development.

President Museveni reminisced about the pivotal moments shared with Mwinyi, including their collaboration during Uganda’s struggle against the dictatorship of Idi Amin. He recalled Mwinyi’s instrumental role in facilitating the delivery of crucial military supplies to Uganda’s Resistance Army (NRA), which aided in the fight for liberation.

He recalled joint initiatives, such as the commissioning of a hydro-power station and the establishment of cross-border infrastructure projects aimed at fostering regional integration and development.

During tumultuous times, including the Rwanda war, Tanzania, under Mwinyi’s leadership, played a constructive and neutral role, facilitating peace negotiations and contributing to regional stability.

President Museveni concluded his tribute by acknowledging Mwinyi’s profound impact within Tanzania and extending heartfelt condolences to his family and Tanzanian comrades. He wished for Mwinyi’s soul to rest in eternal peace, recognizing his enduring legacy and invaluable contributions to the region’s progress.

The passing of Ali Hassan Mwinyi marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of statesmanship, cooperation, and dedication to the advancement of East Africa.
