When love turns to resentment, it can lead to devastating consequences. Bernard Kafua Ndubi, a 30-year-old man, found himself consumed by jealousy and anger after his girlfriend, Carolyne Chemutai, ended their relationship. In a tragic act of revenge, he took the life of Chemutai’s three-year-old daughter, Betty Abigail.

Jilted lovers often struggle with feelings of worthlessness and abandonment, fueling a desire for revenge. For Kafua, the pain of rejection escalated into a violent act of vengeance, resulting in the loss of an innocent child’s life.

Chemutai, unaware of the impending tragedy, had agreed to meet Kafua one last time to discuss their relationship. However, upon arriving at her home, she was shocked to find him enraged by her presence with another man. Instead of confronting Chemutai directly, Kafua chose to target her vulnerable child, Betty Abigail.

Rather than confront Chemutai about her perceived betrayal, Kafua’s actions took a sinister turn. In a fit of jealous rage, he strangled the innocent child and disposed of her body in a pit latrine, robbing Betty Abigail of her future and devastating her family.

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence detailing Kafua’s violent actions on the night of November 8, 2018. Betty Abigail, a resident of Shiamulala village in Namayingo district, went missing from her home, leading to a frantic search by her mother and subsequent police involvement.

Tragically, Betty Abigail’s lifeless body was discovered in a pit latrine, revealing signs of strangulation. Kafua, realizing he was a suspect in the child’s disappearance, surrendered himself to the police, admitting his guilt in a futile attempt to justify his actions.

In a landmark ruling, the High Court of Iganga sentenced Kafua to 14 years in prison for the murder of Betty Abigail. Justice David Batema condemned Kafua’s heinous act, emphasizing the duty of adults to protect children from harm.
