A notorious Wakiso land grabber who for years allegedly terrorized residents by fraudulently claiming ownership of their properties has been sentenced to eight years in prison by the High Court Criminal Division.
Charles Kyagaba was handed two consecutive four-year sentences after being convicted on two counts of obtaining money by false pretences, bringing his total jail term to eight years.
Kyagaba, together with accomplices who remain at large, had become infamous in Wakiso District, particularly in Entebbe, where he was accused of fraudulently claiming ownership of land belonging to unsuspecting residents and selling it to innocent buyers.
His conviction and sentencing mark a significant breakthrough in the government’s ongoing crackdown on land fraud and property-related crimes that have left many families dispossessed and financially devastated.
Before the sentencing, the Entebbe High Court Circuit had convicted Kyagaba on a string of serious charges, including malicious damage to property, fraudulent procurement of land titles, criminal trespass, assault, and forcible entry.
The case stems from a series of complaints lodged by residents of Entebbe and surrounding areas who accused Kyagaba and his associates of using forged land documents, intimidation, and unlawful force to seize private property.
Following widespread public outcry, Kyagaba was arrested in 2022 through a joint operation involving the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the Criminal Investigations Directorate.
Investigators described him as one of the most notorious land grabbers in Wakiso District, whose activities had generated fear and insecurity among property owners.
The eight-year sentence is being viewed as a strong warning to individuals involved in land fraud and illegal evictions, crimes that have become increasingly common in rapidly urbanizing areas around Kampala and Entebbe.
For many residents who had long awaited justice, the court’s decision represents a major victory and a renewed sense of hope that the judiciary and anti-corruption agencies are committed to protecting lawful property owners from organized land theft.
Authorities have indicated that efforts are ongoing to track down Kyagaba’s accomplices, who are still on the run.
The conviction is expected to strengthen public confidence in Uganda’s fight against land grabbing, a problem that continues to fuel conflict, economic loss, and social instability across the country.
