The National Organization of Trade Unions (NOTU) has joined Ugandans in mourning the death of veteran statesman and former Second Deputy Prime Minister, Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, who passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Nakasero Hospital.
In a condolence message issued by NOTU Secretary General Richard Bigirwa, the workers’ umbrella body expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the Government of Uganda, President Yoweri Museveni, and the bereaved family during this difficult period.
“As the most representative labour centre for workers in Uganda, NOTU recognises General Moses Ali not only as a distinguished military leader and astute politician, but also as a dedicated public servant who championed national unity, stability, and peaceful co-existence throughout his remarkable career,” the statement read.
NOTU described Gen. Moses Ali as a leader whose wisdom, resilience, and vast experience inspired generations of Ugandans, including workers and emerging leaders across the country.
For several decades, Gen. Moses Ali served Uganda in various senior government positions, including Second Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament, and Member of Parliament for Adjumani West Constituency.
The labour organisation particularly highlighted his contribution to peace-building, noting that his efforts in reconciling and integrating former combatants in the West Nile sub-region remain a significant part of his legacy.
“His pragmatic approach to peace-building—especially in restoring stability in West Nile—stands as a hallmark of his enduring contribution to national cohesion,” NOTU said.
Workers across the country also remembered Gen. Moses Ali for his open-door leadership style and commitment to dialogue across political and social divides, qualities they said promoted industrial harmony and contributed to Uganda’s socio-economic development.
NOTU further paid tribute to the people of Adjumani West Constituency for their continued support and loyalty to the late leader, including during his period of illness.
“The trust, patience, love, and confidence the people of Adjumani West showed him are a true testament to how deeply a community can value a leader who champions grassroots development over a lifetime,” the statement added.
The organisation extended its condolences to President Museveni, Parliament, the people of West Nile, and the family, friends, and loved ones of Gen. Moses Ali.
Gen. Moses Ali is remembered as one of Uganda’s most influential political and military figures, whose decades of service left a lasting mark on the country’s governance, peace-building efforts, and national development.
