Police Officer in Terego Arrested for Soliciting UGX 200,000 Bribe

The Inspectorate of Government has arrested a police officer attached to Katrine Police Post in Terego district for allegedly demanding and receiving a bribe from a suspect.

Deputy Sergeant Sanyu Fatuma Sebbi, the officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations (CID) was arrested on Thursday by detectives from the Inspectorate of Government Arua regional office with the help of police.

According to the Inspectorate of Government, the suspect was trapped while receiving 200,000 shillings out of the total 400,000 shillings she demanded from the suspect.

“IGG Arua Regional Office with support from police have today arrested the CID Officer of Katrine police post (Terego District), Sanyu Fatuma Sebbi, for allegedly receiving a bribe of UGX200,000 out of the UGX400,000 she demanded from a suspect”, the statement reads in parts.

Preliminary findings indicate that Fatuma had been demanding a bribe from a yet-to-be-identified Boda boda rider to release his motorcycle which was impounded by police following an accident that left one person dead in January. However, the boda boda cyclist decided to inform the office of the IGG to intervene.

When contacted over the matter, Josephine Angucia, the West Nile region police spokesperson disclosed that she is yet to get more details concerning the matter.

“I have seen it on social media, but I don’t have detailed information on this yet as it could be with IGG”, Angucia said.

The suspect is currently being detained at Arua Central Police Station in Arua city and she is expected to be arraigned before the Court on Monday 11th March 2024, according to a statement from the IGG.
