The Police in the western district of Kasese, Uganda, have issued a caution to residents regarding illegal electricity connections, prompted by a heartbreaking incident on Wednesday, March 6. An expectant mother, Macklin Nabasa, and her unborn baby tragically lost their lives due to electrocution. Although the deaths were not directly linked to illegal electricity connections, the officer-in-charge of Kasese Central Police Station, Martin Kizza, emphasized the need for vigilance against such practices to prevent further tragedies.

In response to the incident, Kizza pledged to collaborate with the power distributor Umeme to launch operations against illegal power connections in the area. This joint effort aims to safeguard the lives of residents from similar incidents in the future.

The devastating loss of Macklin Nabasa and her unborn child deeply shocked the local community. Recounting the events leading to her demise, Dan Katongole, the local council one (LC1) chairperson, revealed that Nabasa had been planning to attend her final antenatal appointment just two weeks before her expected delivery date. However, a morning rain delayed her plans, leading her to engage in laundry while waiting for the rain to stop. Tragically, as she attempted to hang clothes on a line, Nabasa came into contact with a live electric wire from a fallen lamp holder, resulting in her instantaneous death along with her unborn child.

The incident also affected an 11-year-old girl named Mariam Kemigisha, who was staying with the couple. In a brave attempt to rescue her relative, she too suffered electrocution but survived with injuries. She was subsequently hospitalized at Mt St Mary’s Hospital in Kasese town.

Upon receiving reports of the incident, the Police documented the scene and transported Nabasa’s body to Kasese Municipal Health Centre III for a postmortem examination. The examination confirmed the tragic loss of the unborn child as well.

Robert Guma, the local council one (LC3) chairperson of Muhokya town council, visited the scene and urged residents to exercise caution around electric wires to prevent similar accidents.

While the incident had not been officially reported to Umeme’s Kasese area office, officials from the headquarters safety office in Kampala visited the site to investigate further.
